Disabling the Windows Pop-up Blocker

Disabling the pop-up blocker can be helpful when the pop-up blocker is preventing the display of legitimate pop-up windows such as the windows used with Blackboard chat.

Disabling the Pop-up Blocker Using the Control Panel

Use this method to disable the pop-up blocker if you have administrative access to unmanaged systems such as: home, RESNET, campus unmanaged system, and
self-managed, complete the following steps to disable the pop-up blocker:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  3. Select the Privacy tab.
  4. Make sure the Block pop-ups option is not selected, then click OK.

Disabling the Pop-up Blocker Using the Local Policy

Use this method to disable the pop-up blocker if you are an IT administrator with administrative access to unmanaged systems or locally managed systems where
the machine is not part of a Windows 2000 or higher domain, complete the following steps to disable the pop-up blocker.

NOTE: If this method is used, disabling the pop-up blocker using the control panel will no longer be an option.

  1. From the Start menu, select the Run option, then enter gpedit.msc.
  2. Expand the Computer Configuration folder, then the Administrative Templates folder.
  3. Expand Windows Component folder, then the Internet Explorer folder.
  4. Expand the Internet Control Panel folder, then the Security Page folder, then the Internet Zone folder.
  5. Double-click the Use Pop-up Blocker option.
  6. Select Disabled, then click OK.
  7. Close the Group Policy window.

Disabling the Pop-up Blocker Using Group Policy

Use this method to disable the pop-up blocker if you are an IT administrator with administrative access to UT-Managed machines that are part of a Windows 2000 or 2003 Active Directory domain, complete the following steps to disable the pop-up blocker:

NOTE: If this method is used, you will not be able to disable the pop-up blocker using the control panel or disable the pop-up blocker using the local policy.

  1. Create a new Group Policy object.
  2. Give this object a descriptive name (for example, ITS-Turn off IE pop-up blocker).
  3. Select the newly created group policy.
  4. Right-click on the newly created policy and select Edit.
  5. Expand the Computer Configuration folder, then the Administrative Templates folder.
  6. Expand Windows Component folder, then the Internet Explorer folder.
  7. Expand the Internet Control Panel folder, then the Security Page folder, then the Internet Zone folder.
  8. Double-click Turn off pop-up blocker.
  9. Select Disabled, then click OK.
  10. Close the Group Policy window.
  11. In the Security Filter section, select Add.
  12. Search for the objects that this group policy will be applied to and click OK.
  13. Close the Group Policy window.
